Middleton Library, Louisiana State University
Situation:
Troy H. Middleton Library is the main library on the campus of Louisiana State University. Before Geoshield window film was installed, the library’s glazing system was comprised of single pane .25 inch glass that had a Solar Heat Gain Coefficient of approximately 75%. This is means that 75% of the suns energy and heat was allowed to enter the building. The window treatments appeared old and deteriorated. The glare coming through the windows made it difficult for students to study and view computer screens. The windows transmitted approximately 74% of visible light from the sun and library books and furnishings were vulnerable to fading cause by UV exposure.
Solution:
Geoshield window film was retrofitted to the windows on the South side of Middleton Library. The installation of Geoshield window film greatly reduces solar heat gain. The addition of Geoshield window film also improves the aesthetics and views of the building from both the interior and exterior. Geoshield window film also provides added glare control and blocks 99% of harmful UV rays which is the leading cause of fading. Geoshield is so confident in its products and services it proudly extended a 10 year commercial warranty to the University.
Results:
After the installation, the library’s glazing system has a Solar Heat Gain Coefficient of approximately 35%. The library’s air condition system now has to work considerably less to remove excessive heat. This decreased the demand on the university energy supply and decreased the maintenance cost and energy cost for operating the air conditioning equipment.
By blocking the heat from the sun, the building is now a more cool and comfortable place for students to relax and study. It also reduced uneven hot spots around windows and the South side of the building. By replacing Middleton Library’s old and deteriorated window treatments with Geoshield window film; the building now appears more uniform and clean. The added glare control from Geoshield window film greatly improved the 2nd floor computer room and now allows the students to better see the computer monitors. With Geoshield window film installed the windows transmit approximately 24% of the suns visible light. The installation allows students to study in cool natural light while opening up the room to views of the quad. The window film blocks out harmful UV rays which will greatly improve the life of the library’s collection. The installation of window film was completed at half the cost of alternative window treatments and will shortly pay for itself through energy savings.
The University was able to reduce the building’s energy consumption by 54,000 kwh per year, at $.13 per kwh that would lead to a $7,020 savings and a return on investment of under 3 years.
